Folklore: Philip was a Confederate sympathizer and slave owner, he sent a name list of Union Sympathizers to the Confederates in Clinton; Later Confederate troops came and took large numbers of men to Knoxville as prisoners of war, they were released by enlisting in the Confederate Army; At first chance they deserted and fled back into the mountains and on to Kentucky joined the Federal Army. Soon afterwards Phillip Seiber was killed when he came out the door of his home; The Duncans were accused for the ambush. Later Wilson Duncan age 13?, s/o Thomas?, a union scout, while guiding a band of union soldiers through the mountains to Kentucky was ambushed and killed; A Seiber-Duncan feud then spread through the mountains by guerilla bands from both sides, killing soldiers and civilians. One of the sneak routes to Kentucky was through the New River area of Anderson, Campbell, and Scott Co., where you could find sympathizers for either side of the war. Susie's first husband is unknown, she had two daughters namely; Lina and Surrelda Wilson before marriage to James McGhee. Lina md Powell Daughtery; Surrelda md Alex Marlow. Lina and Powell Daugherty had a daughter named Surrelda who md Mode Burress, some of Mode and Surrelda's children stated that Lina was full Cherokee Indian from Smokey Creek. Evidently she was one of the descendents of the Smokey Creek Squaw woman, widow of Cherokee Smokey an Indian and first settler of Smokey Creek who died in a battle with Grand Mickey Lowe, first white settler who claimed Smokey with a Land Grant. The settlers provided for the Cherokee Squaw, she had several children who intermarried with the settlers. Cherokee Smokey was banished from his tribe in NC; Smokey Creek was named after him. Susie Wilsons father was Abraham Wilson; Abraham is buried Bullock Cemetery; Abraham's wife Sarah Wilson is buried in Beech Fork Church Cemetery. Moad settled at Clinchmore and served most of his life as constable sheriff; Dist #6, Campbell County. Moad gained many friends among the church people, however he was hated by the moonshiners. In the 40's and 50's Moad traveled in a huge army jeep, most of the time with Hawk Lowe, they both wore badges and holster pistols almost everywhere they went. During Moad's time the Clinchmore and Beech Fork Community was filled with many people, jammed in the coal company houses, from Caryville Mt, to Shea; Most of these old houses are today torn down, only a few exist, none are at Clinchmore, except the old church, meetings are still held there today. Jobs of hard labor were found in the mines, timber woods, sawmills and County road crews. Very few people owned a car, just about everyone walked or rode horses. Large crowds of moonshine drinkers, would gather in public places, Moad and Houk would arrest almost everyone who was guilty of public drunkness, and would haul them off to Jacksboro Jail.
