WILLIAM(BILLY) BYRGE(2/6/1776-12/26/1862),
married Judy Lawson(1802-7/7/1875) a school teacher from Clinton Tn.
Billy and Judy settled on New River and lived just below the Byrge Cemetery,
on the bottom land below the County Bridge(HWY 116), todays dividing line of
Anderson and Campbell Co.
During Billy's time the Anderson County line went all the way to Shea(Beech Fork
Creek). Billy and Judy owned all the mountain from little Creek beyond Cages
Creek. Later he sold this land for 800.00 before the railroad was built up the

William Riley was a talented person, he made musical instruments and could play
most of them. He made violins, guitars, banjos, he also played the accordion and
the organ, was self taught, he made beautiful furniture, was a blacksmith by
trade and a Pentecostal Minister for 55 years.

of the mountain, today called Polly Byrge Mtn, by residents.
Samuel served in the Civil War Union army Co A 1st Inf; He died in Civil War
of Chronic Diarrea and buried in Kentucky. Wife Polly is buried at Rosedale.
CAP Charles T Dunkin 1st TN Inf stated Samuel died in a farm house near
Cumberland Ford KY of Chronic Diarrea, 10 May 1862.

FOLKLORE: Henry Byrge's father and his brother joined the Union Army in the
Civil War, leaving Henry and his mother Polly alone on BootJack Mountain, Polly
would often go get supplies, it would take a full day for her to return, often she
would have to stay gone overnight, leaving Henry alone to do the chores; One of
Henry's jobs was to milk the two cows and feed the hogs; Henry kept his Feist
dog locked up in the crib at night to keep the wolves from killing him.
Often when Polly returned home with supplies the Rebels would take everything
they had, except what Polly could sit on or keep in her lap (war rules); one time
one of the Rebels had a long white beard and was trying to take what Polly was
sitting on, she was slinging him around by his beard, he was trying to get loose,
he yelled to one of the others to hand him a gun, the Captain stepped inside and
yelled"leave her alone you know the rules" they were glad to see them leave that
day.
A young man hiding from the Rebels came an stayed, for his room an board in
exchange he did the plowing and other jobs, when the rebels came through, he
and his horse would hide under a cliff.
Henry's father died in the Civil War, his brother was discharged and returned
home, afterwards Polly bought the old Gabe Keith farm at Rosedale and moved
from the mountain top, she never remarried and died on the farm
(Effie Bunch Ward).

elected Sheriff of Morgan County eight times, and served the constitutional
limit of three successive two year terms on two occasions. At the time of his
first election in 1932, at the age of 26, he was identified as the youngest
Sheriff in the nation. He acquired the nick name of "Pistol Pete". Georgia
Mae was b. 11 May 1906 Morgan County Tennessee, d. 7 Apr 1989 Oakdale,
and is bur. in the Crab Orchard Cemetery, Oakdale, Morgan County Tennessee.
Georgia was known as "Mrs Pete" and once served as interim Sheriff of Morgan

Henry BYRGE
Funeral services were held Sunday at Rosedale, for Henry BYRGE, 85 who died
last Thursday night at the home of his Grand daughter. Mrs E.M. MCGHEE,
108 Broad Street, Clinton, Tennessee
Services were conducted by the Rev. Lee PHILLIPS, Mike BYRGE, and J.M.
CHAMBERS. Burial was in the Rosedale Cemetery, with Booth in charge.
Mr BYRGE, is survived by his wife Lottie BYRGE, four daughters, Mrs Laura
BUNCH, Mrs Emilv BURCH, and Mrs Mandy BURCH all of Rosedale, five sons;
John E. BURLEY of Rosedale, Harvey and W.R. BYRGE of Detroit Michigan,
and Charles of St. Charles, Virginia. A number of grand children also survive.

Army, Civil War, Co I 7th Mtd Inf; He had several nicknames Ell, Rans and
Ramsey; The nickname Ell came from his signature L Kennedy Attorney.
When the Civil War started many were forced to join the south side but at
first chance most fled and joined the union army in KY. Lorenza is also listed
in the Confederate Army, Sgt H Co 42nd Inf.
According to folklore Old Ell was a spy and served both sides.
Old Ell had some full brothers also in the Civil War named; Martin T Jr, Sterling.
He had some ½ brothers in the Civil War named Madison Sr., Goldman, Jackson
and Logan Kennedy; Jackson and Logan were believed to be on the south side and
believed killed in the battle of Lookout Mountain.
Old Ell also had ½ brothers on(Rachel)his mothers side namely;
Old Eli(Loveday)Ward, Duke Ward, William Ward, Old Mike and Ike Tackett,
and John Thompson.
Old Ell survived the war, returned to New River and md Jane in 1865.
Old Ell and Jane are buried in Byrge Cemetery.

It is an accepted fact that Cal BYRGE's father was Henry BYRGE, s/o Samuel
BURGE and Polly "Mary" LUALLEN, and Nancy's first cousin. the father of the
other children are unknown.
Neal BYRGE historian on 7 Sep 1992, interviewed Laura BYRGE BUNCH, of Oliver
Springs, Tn., d/o Henry BYRGE, Laura stated at that time that Calvin(Cal) was in
fact her father's son and her half brother, she further stated that Nancy BYRGE,
d/o Callaway BURGE and Priscilla PATTERSON was his mother. The story goes that
these children were raised by Nancy's mother Priscilla PATTERSON.
A general affidavit signed by Reddin BYRGE and John KENNEDY 21 Jan 1896
states that Priscilla's family consists of four of her grand children, C. BYRGE,
Jasper BYRGE, Liusey BYRGE and Juda BYRGE, one Orphan child, George
PHILLIPS. Copy of this affidavit is contained in the pension application of
Priscilla BYRGE, the application was made based on the service performed by
her husband Callaway BURGE during the Civil War. Pension #423,985.
The orphan child, George PHILLIPS who is mentioned in the affidavit,
according to family members was not an orphan, but was the child of Jane
PHILLIPS the third wife of Priscilla's son Jasper, George was born out of
wedlock and his father is unknown, George(age/14/Mar/1891--3/Jun/1969).
The 1910 Federal Census Records shows George living in the household of
Reddin BYRGE, his relationship to head of household was, servant.
1900 Federal Census, Anderson Co Tn., show Louisa and Juda still living in the
household of Priscilla BYRGE, relationship to head of household was grand
daughters, records further show that Louisa was single, had one child with one
living, the child was not listed as living in the household.

Family members say Cal and Mary had one child, a son Melton b. 4 Sep 1906.
1910 Federal Census for Ca-Co Tn., shows Cal as head of household, md 2 times
and md 14 years. Wife Mary age 22 md 14 years, had 3 children with 3 living,
if her years of marriage and her age is stated correctly, Mary would only have been
8 years of age when she married Cal. Living in household was, son Melton age 8,
daughter, Verdy age 7, and son Elvey age 6.
Calvin "Cal" served in the US Army, Company "D" 4th Regt Tn Infantry 9 Jul 1898 -
6 May 1899, served in Cuba during the Spanish American War. Military records
indicates he was 22 years old when enlisted, was 5 feet 6 and 1/4 inches tall, light
complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, was b. at Ligias Tennessee, single, next of kin
Miss L.J. BYRGE, this was probably his sister Louisy Jane.
Cals wife; Mary PHILLIPS(/28/Apr/1887-- 21/June/1935) was d/o Milton PHILLIPS
and Margaret "Peggy" MILLER, Mary is bur. in the PHILLIPS Cemetery, Ca-Co-Tn.
Mary 2nd md Bratcher BYRGE 12 Dec 1924 Ca-Co-Tn, they did not have any
children, Bratcher was s/o Jasper BYRGE and Jane PHILLIPS. After Mary's death
Bratcher md Rutha CARROLL 19 Oct 1935, Rutha was do Calvin CARROLL and
Bethanes PHILLIPS.
According to legend Marys grandson Elsic was playing with a shotgun which
accidently discharged and killed Mary.
