THE NEW RIVER DAUGHERTY'S There were so many Daughertys on New River with the same first name they were given nicknames by the people of New River to tell them apart, only a few nicknames are mentioned in this writing. ELL DAUGHERTY(1819-1875). There were many Ell Daugherty's, this Ell is believed to be s/o of Old Daniel Daugherty (1797/1882) and 1st wife who came from S.C. It is believed that Old Daniel was s/o Solomon Daugherty, and his first wife was the d/o John Aashurst. Ell lived in Scott County when he enlisted at Jacksboro in Co A 1st Tn Inf 8/2/1861 Union Army, Civil War. He was reported to suffer from a rupture and chronic diarrhea and discharged in Cincinatti Ohio 5/23/1863. Ell received his mail at Podophline P.O. (Rosedale), 10th CD of Anderson Co TN, in 1870. On 11/1830 Ell md Nancy(1815-1905) in Anderson Co TN. Ell and Nancy are Buried in Bunch Cem. at Rosedale. CHILDREN; Mary, Daniel, William, Bird, John, Silas, Ell, Rhuben, Francis.

This Daniel served also in the Civil War, Co A, 1st Tn Inf., and buried in Beech Fork Cemetery. His widow Susie Marlow Daugherty md 2nd to Thomas Phillips(b/1855), s/o Claibourne(b/1827)and Clarissa Ward Phillips. Thomas Phillips also served in the Civil War. Thomas and Susie lived at Stainville on New River, Anderson Co TN., and later moved to the ridges in Caryville. Thomas is buried in Rains Grove Cem., Caryville TN. Note; 11/6/1863, most all of the 2nd Tn (about 500 men) were captured at Rogersville TN by the Confederates and taken to Belle Isle VA. Most went to the horrible Andersonville GA., prison camp. Almost all died of exposure & starvation; They were held in a pasture like cattle with almost no shelter; Several men from New River were in this battle. ................................ Family Legend) In the early 1900's moonshine whiskey flowed from the New River Area, law and order was hard to find. Bird Daugherty was Deputy Sheriff of 10th CD Anderson County. Bird arrested Watson Daugherty, s/o Daniel Britton Daugherty which started a feud between the two Daugherty families. 4/9/1922 Bird and sons Willie and Fisher were ambushed and killed on top of Waldens Ridge, And-Co; A witness Pyre Bunch stated all three were shot and killed, one was on his knees praying. Daniel Britton Daugherty and Bob Lowe stood trial and were sentenced to prison for murder. John Sr enrolled in the Union Army at Jacksboro TN, 8/2/1861; Co A 1st Regt Tn Inf Vol. Left sick at Cumberland Gap, 9/17/1862, and so reported until 10/31/1863. 12/1862 absent. JOHN DAUGHERTY (1826-1900). John's parents are unknown, born in Morgan Co (m) Rebecca Stringfield at Wartburg in 1846. Enlisted Union Army 7/31/1862, Pvt Co E 11th and Co G 9th Tn Vol Cal; Wounded in both shoulders stationed at Huntsville TN 10/8/1862. John was discharged at Lenoir Tn 7/5/1865; Described as 5' lO'' fair com, light hr, bl eyes. JOHN AND REBECCA'S CHILDREN: James(b/1848), Ples(b/1850), William(b/1852), Lucinda, Anna(b/1858). NOTE: If John was in the battle at Huntsville Tn, then he was in the old 7th Inf. Col Wm Clift was sent to the New River Mts with secret orders to raise a gurrella warfare outfit called 7th Tn Inf. One battle was at Huntsville; They became a thorn in the side of the Confederates, who sent an army of 1500 to 2000 men to capture Col Clift, dead or alive, they failed. Col Clift with about 50 men held them off for 1:45 minutes until everyone escaped along with their equipment. Afterward the Old 7th was merged into other outfits. John Daugherty(1826-1900), born Morgan Co, Tn. He was married to Rebeca Stringfield, in 1846 at Wartburg, Morgan County, by John Stringfield. On July 31, 1862, John enlisted in the Union Army and served as a Private in Company E, llth, and Co. G, 9th Tenn Vol Cav. He was stationed at Huntsville, Scott County, Tennessee during the Autumn of 1862, where he was wounded thrice in right arm near the shoulder and one in the left shoulder blade on October 8, 1862. He was discharged at Lenoir, TN, July 5, 1865. In his pension records he is described as 5 ft 6 in tall, fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes. John and Rebeca had at least 5 children: 1. James Daugherty, born 1848. 2. Ples Daugherty, born 1850. 3. William Daugherty, born 1852. 4. Lucinda Daugherty 5. Anna J. Daugherty, born 1858. John died about July 11, 1900, probably in Scott County, TN, where he had moved sometime prior to his death.
