HARMON, CUTLIFF(1737-1838) OF VALLE CRUCIS NC. By Henry Ward. The Harmons who live in Anderson and Campbell County Tennesse today are most likely descendents of Cutliff Harmon, who lived in and around Vaalle Crucis NC.
CUTLIFF1 HARMON(3/08/1737-1838), born Rowan Co., NC., md SUSAN FOUTS(1751-7/08/1817), b/Ashe Co, NC, dau of Theobald PHOUTS and Catherine SPENGLE. About 1791 Cutliff Harmon came from Randolph County NC., and bought 522 acres of land from James Gwen on Cove Creek. At the mouth of Phillips Branch there is a huge cliff rock; A story handed down says that Cutliff Harmon and family lived under this cliff until he built his home nearby. FLORENCE ALICE4 HARMON (COUNCIL3, ANDREW2, CUTLIFF1) CONTINUED, DAU OF COUNCIL HARMON. (5a3) FLORENCE ALICE4 HARMON(3/27/1858-7/07/1915), born Wautaga Co NC, died Van Buren Co, Ak. married (1) JOHN ALEXANDER TESTER(11/9/1868-11/19/1940)), son of WILLIAM TESTER and SUSAN DYER. Alex was born in Boone, Watauga Co, NC, and died in Leslie, Searcy County, Ak. Florence, md (2) UNKNOWN JOHNSON. FLORENCE ALICE HARMON AND JOHN A TESTER: Burial: Old Salem Cemetery at Rocky Hill - Van Buren Co, Arkansas Census listings for John A. Tester: 1900 Laurel Creek, Watauga Co, NC: John A. 31-farmer, Alice F. 41, James L. 12, Bessie E. 8, Marthy A. 5 1910 Cleveland Township, Van Buren Co, Arkansas: John A. 43-sawmill engineer, Alice F. 54, Bessie E. 17, Martha A. 15 John Alexander Tester(b/11/09/1868), Boone, Watauga Co, NC., s/o William Harry Tester and Susan Dyer. His paternal grandparents were John Tester born ca 1815 and Ellender Danner born ca 1820. John's maternal grandparents were Joel Dyer born ca 1813 and Mary Polly Callihan born ca 1816. In 1886, John md Florence Alice Harmon born March 27, 1858, d/o Council Harmon and Celia Ward. Council's first wife was Nancy Elizabeth Tester, John's great-aunt was the daughter of Samuel Tester and Mary Elizabeth Daniels. Alice was previously married to a Johnson and had one son, William b/1879, and died before 1900. In the 1900 Watauga Co census, Alice lists having five children with four living at the time. John and Alice's four children were James Lewis, Idor Elizabeth, Bessie Ella and Martha Adeline, all born in Watauga Co where they lived until after 1900. Between 1903 and 1906, John, along with his brothers, Joel, Joseph and Julius Tester left Watauga Co, NC., and moved to Van Buren Co, Ark., on Archey Creek. Among others who came to Arkansas with them were Alice's half-brother, Eli George Washington Harmon who was also the father of Joel and Joseph's wives, Lydia and Mandy Harmon, Eli's son, Andrew J. Harmon and James Mitchell Presnell and their families. According to the 1910 Van Buren Co Census, John lived in Cleveland Township and worked as a sawmill engineer. John and Alice lost their only son, James Lewis, when he was struck by lightening while clearing some land with a team of oxen on June 7, 1908 at the age of 20. Alice then died in 1915 and John then md Mary Melinda Curtis on November 18, 1916 in Elba. John and Melinda lived in Leslie in Searcy County where he worked in the jewelry business making and repairing clocks. Melinda was previously married to Henry Basinger and no children were born to this marriage. Melinda and Henry divorced. From letters written from Melinda to her brother Alvin Curtis, Henry was mean and abusive to her. John and Melinda children: Thelma Leonia, Arthur Eldon, Anie Eddie, Mary Sue, Anna Mae, and William Madison. In his later years, John became city marshal and deputy sheriff there in Leslie until he was killed by his son-in-law, John D. Hilton on November 19, 1940. This article appeared in Volume 49 of the Marshall Mountain Wave on 11/22/1940: ARRESTED AS SLAYER OF WIFE'S FATHER J. A. Tester, 81, former city marshal and deputy sheriff was shot and killed at his home here Tuesday by his son-in-law, J. D. Hilton 25, a WPA worker. Wives of the two men were witnesses to the shooting. The two families lived in the same house. Immediately following the shooting, Mrs. Hilton and Mrs. Tester went to the home of City Marshal Hobbah Stephenson, who lives nearby and reported the tragedy. Hilton arrived at the officer's home a few minutes later and asked the officer to go to the home and see if Mr. Tester were dead. Mrs. Hilton told Marshal Stephenson that Hilton returned home late in the day and apparently had been drinking. She said he found his pistol which she had hidden and fired several shots into the ceiling of the bedroom. Then he took a shotgun from a rack near a door, loaded both barrels and was standing with his back to the door when Mr. Tester entered the room. Mrs. Hilton said he whirled around and fired at Mr. Tester. The charge struck him in the side of the head apparently causing instant death. Neither man had spoken, Mrs. Hilton said. Hilton's version of the shooting, the officer said, was that he was standing in the room with a shotgun preparing to go rabbit hunting when the elder man entered the room, seized the pistol from a table and threatened him. He said he fired in self-defense. The Hiltons have been married about four years. They have a daughter. Mr. Tester had lived in this section most of his life. He had been in the jewelry business later becoming jailer, city marshal and Deputy sheriff. Hilton was taken to Marshall and placed in the county jail. He probably will receive a hearing this week. Mr. Tester is survived by his wife, two sons and five daughters. As we go to press this (Thursday afternoon) we learn that Prosecuting Attorney Les Jones who has been in Newton circuit court at Jasper this week has filed a first degree murder charge against Hilton and the latter is being held in jail pending the arrival of Mr. Jones for preliminary hearing. John is buried at Old Salem Cemetery at Rocky Hill in Van Buren County beside his first wife, Alice and his son James Lewis. For some reason, John gave his age 10 years older than his actual age. His headstone gives his birth year as 1858 and his marriage record in Searcy County, records his age as 50. The reason could have been that Alice was a little over 10 years older than John.

(5a17a) MARY L.5 ROLAND(b/1865), md Willis HICKS(b/1859), Watauga Falls, NC. NOTE! Willis was born in 1859 at Watauga Falls in Watauga County. On May 10, 1880, he married Mary Roland, daughter of William Roland and Rena Harmon Roland of Madison County. Mary was fifteen years old at the time of the 1880 census. Both the Roland and Harmon families came from the Watauga River area where he and Mary lived briefly before moving to Madison County. Willis' marriage to Mary Roland is recorded in Cocke County, Tennessee. Willis became something of a desperado as a young man and did a lot of "rambling." It is said that he killed a man in Virginia and was wanted in that state for murder but he returned to Haywood county where he hid out in the rough back country, living mostly in the open or in temporary shelters. He was often accompanied by his wife, Mary, along with other women including Mary's sister, "Nan" Roland whose married name may have been "Ketion." Nan reportedly lived in Rose Hill, Virginia (in Lee County) but returned to Haywood County to be with her sister and with Willis. Willis was among the first of his family, along with his cousins Ransom and Thomas Hicks, to leave the Watauga River area and settle in what is now Madison County. Willis and his party were surprised in their hideout near the Pigeon River by Haywood County Sheriff, Bob McGaha (some say it was "Wils" McGaha) who had formed a posse to capture the fugitive. Willis and his women were well- armed and the Sheriff's appearance triggered a shootout in which Willis was killed and one or more in the Sheriff's posse were wounded. Willis was buried at Little Grassy Fork near Newport, Tennessee but there is a tradition that Mary had his body exhumed and removed to Virginia, possibly to the area around Rose Hill. Willis was a moody and temperamental man who had a way with women. His marriage to Mary Roland is recorded; his relationship with Nan Ketion is not. There is no evidence that Willis and Mary had children. He also had no known place of residence after he left the Meadow Fork community but often stayed, for short periods, with his brother Merritt Linville Hicks, who lived at the foot of Long Arm Mountain, across the River from Cold Springs in Haywood County. -The Hicks Families of Western North Carolina.

FOLKLORE: The first white man to settle on Beech Fork Creek (Shea Tn) was named Ward, he lived in a huge hollow giant Beech Tree, Beech Fork got its name because of the giant beech trees that grew there. If the story is true the man would surely be Benjamin2 Ward Jr, or his brother Michael 2 Sr Ward from Valle Crucis NC. My guess is they lived in the Hollow Beech Tree's while exploring and hunting, and later brought their family to the area. In 1835 Benjamin sold his property to Drewry Carroll and Selah Ward. Selah was his daughter who married Drewry Carroll; The land sold was located on the banks of Beech Fork Crk and New River, this land today is broken up into lots, the Fellowship Baptist Church sits on one of the lots. Celia came to the 14th CD of Campbell CO TN with her father and mother and md Drewry Carroll(1800-1874), s/o old Drewry and Nancy who settled on Smokey Creek in Scott Co TN. There is strong evidence of a blood tie between the Carrolls and the descendents of Cherokee Smokey and his Squaw woman who were living on Smokey Creek when the 1st settler came namely; Grand Mikel Low in the late 1700's, the Indian did not like Low's presence on Smokey Creek, they later became involved in a death struggle between them, Mikel slew the Indian, his Squaw remained in the settlement and had several ½ breed children; According to folklore her children were Carrolls and Low's, her daughter named Louisa Carroll was the 1st wife of Old Madison Kennedy.
SEE INDIAN DESCENT-CHEROKEE SMOKEY Selah and Drewry may have married in NC and could have come with parents about 1824 and settled on Smokey Creek in Scott County. In 1835 Drewry bought 20 acres on Beech Fork at New River from his father-in-law, Benjamin 2Ward Jr. This is the last document I believe that Old Benjamin 2 signed, Benjamin died about 1837. JoHile one of the children could remember a Confederate Patrol from the Civil War camping in Uncle William's yard who caught and cooked all of their chickens in a large Iron kettle. Pappy Ben Phillips(1877-1982) said he plowed for Uncle Billy Ward who lived at Welch's Camp(Beech Fork Church Area).
