MADISON KENNEDY SR(1815-1891)GENERATION s/o Martin T Kennedy[1790-1849] and 1st wife. By Henry Ward. Madison 1st md Sarah Carroll and 2nd Profanie White Marlow. MADISON AND SARAH CHILDREN (1) to (6).
|| (1) Barzilla Kennedy. || (2) Nisby Kennedy. || || (3) William Jackson Kennedy. || (4) Wesley Kennedy. || || (5) Madison Jr. Kennedy. || (6) Reverend Richmond Kennedy. || MADISON AND FANIE'S CHILDREN(7) to (9). || (7) Martin Kennedy. || (8) John Kennedy. || || (9) Calvin Marlow. ||
Some of the first generation spellings were; Kanady, Canady. The Kennedy's are believed to came from the British Isles to America into Virginia, then following the Old Wilderness Road, cut by Daniel Boone; Today from Boone NC; 421 to Cumberland Gap; or (today HWY 11 and 25E) to Big Creek Gap (Lafollette)(HWY 63) through Pioneer Gap to Huntsville, into Smokey Creek. Some of the older generation spoke with an Irish accent into the middle of the 1900's. Daniel Boone-Wilderness Road Madison is listed in the 1850 Campbell Co census: No 24. 17th Subdivision Campbell Co, TN. By: John Phillips on the 22nd day of August 1850; Canady, Madison 35 Farmer 600 NC; Sarah 42 TN; Barzilla 15, TN; Wesley 13,TN; Jackson 10, TN; Celia 8, TN; Madison 4, TN; Nathan R. D. 1 TN. Madison Kennedy(3/4/1815-12/6/1891) PICTURE. was one of the first settlers on New River. Madison is the son of Old Martin Kennedy Sr (1790-1849) and his first wife who came from NC, and settled on Beech Fork Creek about 1824. This is proven in the civil war disability record of Madisons half brother, Sterling Kennedy. Old Martin and his 3rd wife Rachel Ward Tackett Thompson is buried in Carroll- Adkins Cemetery, near Beech Fork Church, Campbell CO TN. FOLKLORE: Three Kennedy brothers from North Carolina settled in the mountains of New River, one brother left and went to Georgia. If this is true then the brother who left was Logan, according to and old land deed recorded in 1838, Madison stated Logan was beyond the reach of the State. This deed was written in 1835.
(7) BENJAMIN WARD TO DREW CARROLL (Anderson Co TN 1838)DEED. According to a writing by Viola Hembree, Madison had a 1/2 brother Goldman, also a brother named Jackson who lived in Bradley County, Cleveland Tenn. Madison rode a mule with a leather strap that went all the way around the mule, under its tail and across the breast to keep the saddle from sliding, when going up or down steep grades, he called it a crupper. According to tradition when the first settler Grand Mikel Lowe arrived and claimed Smokey Creek, a Cherokee Indian and his Squaw were living there; Lowe killed the Indian, the Squaw remained in the white settlement and had several 1/2 breed children; One of her daughters, Sarah Carroll(1808-1862) was first wife of Madison Kennedy. Madison and Sarah made their home on top of Bootjack Mountain, in the old mountain footpath from Shea to Smokey Creek. REFERENCES; SEE, CHEROKEE SMOKEY When the Civil War broke out in 1861 the Confederates were patroling the New River Area and forcing men to Join or go to prison, several joined but later deserted and joined the Union Army. Men who lived in the New River Area traveled in large groups to Kentucky to join the Union Army, the group leaders were called pilots. 11/27/1861; Madison Kennedy and his sons, William Jackson, Wesley and Madison Jr., mustered in at Camp Dick Robinson, London, Kentucky and were put in Co H and G 2nd Regiment, Union army. Six weeks later, 1/19; and 1/20/1862, they fight the battle of Mill Springs(Logans Cross Rds)(Battle of Fishing Creek), the Union Army won this battle. 1/25/1862, the Union Army marched from Mill Springs to Cumberland Ford,Ky, the weather was bad, William Jackson Kennedy became sick from exposure, his mother Sarah came and nursed him at Cumberland Ford Ky., and became sick from exposure also, they both died and believed to be buried there. About a year later a Confederate Patrol passed through Lowe Gap and killed Wesley Kennedy when he was home on a furlough. 11/6/1873; About 500 of the 2nd TN Infantry was captured at Rogersville, TN., by the Confederate 4th Ky Calvery and taken to Belle Isle VA; and to the horrible Andersonville Georgia Confederate Prison Camp, where the survivors spent the winter of 1863-64, by digging holes in the ground to sleep. Prisoners were put in a large pasture field with no shelter and little food, in places there was no fence, guards were placed on the dead mans line several yards apart, anyone who stepped across the line was shot. Starved and exposued to the weather hundreds died every day and were buried in long trenches. When new prisoners arrived they were robbed of everything by starving fellowmen. 11/29/1864, Madison escaped; Madison and a group of men from Pennsylvania who were believed to be musical talented were put to work gathering firewood and helping the cooks. Madison gave his shoes to another to take his place gathering wood, and while foraging for wood they slipped away; The dogs caught some of the men. Madison walked to Tennessee barefoot, taking 21 days to reach the Union lines; The dogs chewed Madisons legs up badly, because of this he hated and killed dogs the rest of his life, even though he was an ordained preacher, active in church and performed many marriages. Thomas and Profanie White Marlow lived close to Madison at the start of the Civil War; Old Thomas Marlow and his sons also traveled to Kentucky and joined the Union Army; Old Thomas got sick, died and buried in Nickolsville Ky; Later his widow Profanie, married Madison Kennedy. Madison and 2nd wife Profanie(Fanie) White Marlow Kennedy and some family members are buried in Marlow Cemetery, located beside the Beech fork Road, near Beech Fork Church, New River Area of District 6, Campbell County Tennessee.
