THE NEW RIVER KENNEDYS The Kennedys came from the British Isles, of Scotch Irish descent, through North Carolina into Tennessee. Most all the older Kennedy generation living of the New River Area, in the middle 1900's spoke with an Irish accent. MARTIN T KENNEDY 1 SR(1790-1849). By Henry Charles Ward Martin T. Kennedy1 Sr(1790-1849) came to the New River Area of Anderson, Scott and Campbell Co TN before 1830 from NC. His land entries in the Anderson Co TN Courthouse; 6/21/1824(P 550 #141) (P579 #141) (P 69 #279). Martin Kennedy also filed on 100 AC of land 12/2/1834 at Goodmans Branch on the waters of Smokey Creek, Scott County. Martin also filed on 10 acres 9/27/1826 on the north side of Beech Fork at New River, the first bottom below Keiths survey, above the first ford above the said Beech Fork. From 1838 until 1849 Martin paid tax to Anderson County on 15 acres of land. Scott, Anderson and Campbell Co, boundries are close to each other in the area, the boundries were later changed. His land entries in Anderson Co are probably in Campbell Co today. The 1830 Anderson County census lists Martin Kennedy Sr, born 1790-1795, 3 males born 1815-1820, 1 dau born 1815-1820, his wife born 1790-1795 (Martin's 1st wife unknown) and children; Logan, Jackson, Madison Sr., and daughter unknown. In 1839 Martin Sr., 2nd(m)Lucy Davis, CHILDREN; Goldman. Martin 3rd married Rachel Ward in 1841, d/o Benjamin2 Ward Jr, CHILDREN; Sterling, Martin Jr, and Lorenza(Ell). Rachel 3 Ward and children are proven in the civil war record of her son Sterling Kennedy. (11) STERLING KENNEDY DISABILITY (12) STERLING KENNEDY DISABILITY Rachel Ward Kennedy Tackett Thompson(1811-1870) buried in Carroll-Adkins Cemetery on Beech Frk Crk came to the Beech Frk Area about 1841, she had 3 known sons before marriage, namely Eli Ward, William Ward and Duke Ward. William is believed to be Wm Logan Ward buried at Beech Fork Church. Eli Ward is also buried at Beech Frk Church on New River. Duke Ward is buried in Rains Grove Cem at Caryville. Rachel 3 Ward and children are proven in the civil war record of her son Sterling Kennedy. Duke Ward(buried in Sunset Cem., Clinton, g/son of Rachel and son of Eli WARD wrote in his bible that Eli WARD'S father was Henry Loveday from Wautaga Co., NC. According to folklore, Henry and Rachel were engaged but Henry died before the wedding. Rachel Ward in 1841 md Martin Kennedy Sr; She was his 3rd wife. THEIR CHILDREN; Sterling, Martin Jr., and Lorenza(Ell). Old Martin Kennedy Sr died in 1849. Rachel married again to John Tackett(1785-1856), CHILDREN: Mike and Ike Tackett. JOHN TACKETT (1785-1856) AND RACHEL WARD (1811-1870). John Tackett died and Rachel md Wm Thompson, they had a son, namely; John R THOMPSON(b1860). Old Martin Kennedy Sr., and John Tackett are buried in the Carroll-Adkins Cemetery on Beech Fork Creek, which was once part of their land. Rachel Wards stone reads Rachel Thompson, also in the same Cemetery.

(1) REV MADISON2 KENNEDY SR(1815-1891), md 1st Sarah Carroll(1808-1862), d/o Cherokee Smokey and Squaw from Smokey Crk, CHILDREN; Barzilla, Nisby, Wm Jackson, Wesley, Madison Jr., Rev Richmond. Sarah died of Exposure in the Civil War and Madison md 2nd to Profanie White Marlow, widow of Thomas Marlow who died in the Civil War. CHILDREN; Martin, John, Calvin Marlow stp/son. Madison's army record states he had a brother named Goldman and a brother named Jackson, and was born in Wilkes or Surry Co NC in 1815, and came to Beech Fork as a child. Reverend Madison's life is filled with death and trouble. Madison has been proven to be a son of Martin1 in the civil war disability of Sterling2 Kennedy. (SEE MADISON KENNEDY SR (1815-1891) for descendents. Jackson Kennedy of Clinton filed a Land grant, Anderson Co., Courthouse. Logan Kennedy of Beech Fork also filed a land grant. Folklore tells of three Kennedy brothers who were among the first settlers in the Beech Fork Area, one brother left and never returned, this could be Martins three sons; Jackson, Logan and Madison Sr. Madison left only for the Civil War. According to a land deed recorded June 1838, Madison Kennedy stated that he personally knew Logan Kennedy and he was beyond the reach of the state. Madison and Logan are sons of Martin Kennedy Sr., and his first wife.

According to an old land deed recorded in 1838, in Anderson Co-TN., Madison Kennedy stated he knew Logan Kennedy and he was beyond the reach of the State; *Logan and Jackson were living in Anderson County and left about 1835, going to Georgia. * Logan and Jackson were probably together in the Civil War, Confederate Army ? both died in the battle of Lookout Mt, in Chattanooga? * Has not been proven. Evidently Goldman heired all of his parents land; In 1886 Goldman and Mary sold two tracts of land at Beech Fork(Shea), to Lacy Adkins Sr., for two thousand dollars. In 1886 Goldman purchased land in 8th CD, Anderson Co(Poplar Creek); Goldman died in 1889 from a fall off his horse. Goldman and Mary are buried in Cemetery 30, Oak Ridge. (4b) MARGARET(PEGGIE)3 KENNEDY(1857-1883), md George Marlow(b/1855), s/o? Thomas Marlow. Margaret(Peggy) buried in Carroll-Adkins Cemetery, on her father's old property at Shea(Beech Fork). Sabra Carroll was 2nd wife of George. According to other historians, this George Marlow is a descendent of Thomas Sr from VA., there are four Marlows named George and seven named Powell, and not to be confused with George W. Marlow, killed by Miles Deweese. There is an error in the George Marlows[needs to be corrected]. According to tradition Margaret(Peggie)was found dead in Beech Fork Creek, George remarried and later while working in the logging woods a gun fell out of his pocket which accidently discharged and killed him. George Marlow's 1st wife Peggie3 Kennedy died, George 2nd md Sabra Carroll, d/o Bird and Elizabeth Phillips Carroll, later while working in the woods a gun fell out of George's pocket, accidently killing him. After George's death his father-in-law Goldman Kennedy was appointed guardian of his orphan children. After Goldman died uncle Sterling Kennedy was appointed guardian. 11/16/1891, George W. Rachel had 3 children before marriage, namely; Dukey, Wm and Eli who went by the name of Ward. This is confirmed in the civil war record of Sterling Kennedy. (5) STERLING KENNEDY( May 3, 1841--1905), Sterling may have had a middle name (LAWSON). s/o Martin T and Rachel WARD KENNEDY, 1st md Elizabeth Ward(b/1846) on 10/20/1860, his 1st cousin. CHILDREN: Izella(b/2/28/1864). Elizabeth Ward, was d/o William Ward, brother of Rachel Ward, Sterlings mother. Elizabeth and Sterling divorced in 1866; Elizabeth 2nd md Philips Seiber. In 1867 Sterling md Margaret WILSON(b/1844). Sterling served in CO I 7th Mtd Inf. and 2nd TN INF Union Army Civil War. He enlisted in Nov. 1864 and was discharged July 1865. Earlier in the War, he was captured for about 4 weeks by the Confederate Army and kept in prison at Knoxville, and then to Wartrace(40 mi south of Nashville) where he got away from them. After Sterling came home from the war, he lived with his 1st wife Elizabeth Ward for about a year; They separated and Elizabeth married Philip Seiber in 1866 and Sterling married Margaret Wilson(b/9/9/1844), d/o Abraham and Sarah WILSON in 1867. Sterling moved from the Beech Fork area in 1890 to Pouplar Creek, near Oak Ridge. Sterling buried in Gibbs#2 Cemetery on Marlow Road, approximately 2/10 mi from Hwy 61, near Oak Ridge TN. Sam and Rachel buried in Poplar Creek Cemetery A-Co., Tn. Rachel was b-Scott County Tn-d-Clinton Anderson Co Tn. Sam and Rachel married October 12, 1900 at Dossett, Anderson Co, TN. Sam was a coal miner back then, later a farmer, then worked as a logger clearing trees for TVA, hurt his back and went back to farming in 1975. (5a6) Ruby Lois Jones(17 Feb 1914-14 March 2003), d/o Sam and Rachel, married Clyde E. Wilson of Carroll Co., Arkansas. Lived in Marlow, Clyde was a Lawyer, Ruby was a Schoolteacher. After retirement, they raised polled herefords at their place in Marlow. CHILDREN: Mary Elizabeth Wilson (b/1950) and Robert Wilson (b/1952).

(5b) Emma KENNEDY (3/5/1878-7/22/1968), PICTURE. d/o Sterling and Margaret, married Joseph Dagley(1870-1950), of Marlow. They had 4 girls. Emma and Joe buried in Popular Creek Bap Ch Cemetery, A-Co TN.
(5c) Isabel KENNEDY(1890-1943), PICTURE. d/o Sterling and Margaret, Aunt Bell was mildly retarded, never married. Sterling and Margaret Kennedy owned a lot of land in the Marlow area but after Sterling died, his business partner made some investments that didn't pan out. Isabell Kennedy pretty much died in poverty. Just a small government pension for Bell.
According to some family information, Sterling Kennedy never saw his daughter Izella again, after he moved to Anderson Co. Sterling Kennedy was a large man, he weighed 350 lbs,was 6'7" and wore a size 17 shoe. His wife; Margaret Wilson Kennedy was a tiny woman, barely weighed 100 pounds. Sterling and Margaret had 3 daughters: Rachel, Emma, Isabel. Sterling Kennedy's first wife, Elizabeth Ward Kennedy 2nd md Old Philip Seiber(1824-1907) in 1867. Philip served in CO l 9TH TN CAL, Civil War. Philip first settled at Stainville, and believed to be the Constable for years on New River. On 2/3/1853 he 1st md Melviney Tucker(1833/1902), and divorced. Melvina 2nd md Old James Bunch in 1868; She 3rd md Bird Carroll. Melvina Carroll(1834-1902), buried in Grave Hill Cemetery, A-CO TN. Philip 2nd md Elizabeth Ward(b/1846), d/o Wm and Jane Ward. Elizabeth 1st md Sterling Kennedy in 1860, divorced in 1866. In 1867 Elizabeth md Philip Seiber and moved to Clinchmore in Campbell Co, TN. When Rachel first came to the New River Area of Anderson, Scott, and Campbell Co,Tennessee, She had a son Eli Ward. Eli md Elizabeth Webb in 1848. Eli was the father of 21 children; Eli's father is Henry Loveday. According to family folklore Henry Loveday & Rachel Ward were to be married, Henry died before the wedding, Rachel came west with the other Wards from Watauga Co NC, Eli was born in NC. Rachel and Eli kept the surname Ward. Eli Ward buried in Beech Fork Cem. See Eli Ward Generation Of New River.
