THE SCOTT COUNTY TENNESSEE LOW OR LOWE GENERATION Old Grand Michel1 Lowe (1771-1859. Compiled By Henry C Ward. FOLKLORE: Banished from his tribe who lived in the Smokey Mountains, Cherokee Smokey and his Squaw settled in Tennessee on the waters of Smokey Creek and New River. About 1796 Grand Michel1 Low(1771-1859) came to Smokey Creek with a land grant from North Carolina, claiming the land from New River up Smokey Creek on both sides, to the tops of the mountains to the head of Smokey Creek. Grand Michel1 was Scotch-Irish, the Scotch-Irish show up in many of his descendents which often leads to disputes, fights and lawsuits; His descendents were involved in many lawsuits, trying to settle who owned what, leaving little profit when the timber, coal and land was sold; However there is a strong love bond among many of his descendents. After Grand Michel1 arrived, Cherokee Smokey became jealous over his squaw and his right to the land, which resulted in a death battle between them; According to tradition Grand Michel1 while fishing saw the Indian prowling armed with his bow and arrow attempting to kill him, with one shot from his Hog Rifle Michel shot the Indian dead. This place to this day is called the Indian Hole on Smokey Crk. Afterwards the settlers took care of the Squaw woman until she died; She had several half breed children who intermarried with the settlers children. It is very hard to prove the Squaw woman as an ancestor, because the Indian had no rights as a citizen, therefore it was kept a secret. Many people of New River are direct descendents to the Squaw woman and have no proof. According to a cemetery book of Scott County Grand Michel1 Low was from Germany. Grand Michel1 was good at hunting, especially bears, which were plentiful on Smokey Creek, once he crawled in a dark cave and was punching about with a stick when a bear tried to get out over him, they became stuck in the cave and by the time Grand Michel backed out he was clawed very bad, scarred for the rest of his life. According to folklore Grand Michel1 was father of some of the squaw woman's children. Michel and his first wife Betsy Bordner came from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, then to Smokey Creek. Grand Michel1 is buried in Low Cemetery on Smokey Creek. INDIAN LINK REFERENCES: CHILDREN; Michael Jr(1795-1879), Philip Sr(1801-1855), Joseph(b/1812), Elizabeth(b/1816) and two daughters unknown. md John Shoopman(1803-1866). Information from a picture taken by McKinley Lowe in 1962: John Shoopman1803-1866) buried in Old Low Cem, Smokey Creek, was the husband of one of Old Michel Low's daughters. 1860 Census, Scott County: Shoopman John 56; Elizabeth 44; Martha 15; Virginia Low 60. In Dwelling*8 was Issac and Elizabeth Low Duncan(This Elizabeth was the d/o Michael Low Jr). (SEE MICHAEL LOW JR( 1a). About 1850; During the first days of court at Huntsville TN the jug was passed in the court room, before the end of the day the Judge was most often intoxicated. About 1850; It was believed to be the Honorable Judge E. Alexander holding his first day of court in Huntsville, Tn., one of the Lowes from Smokey who had too much dram to drink, rode around the court yard on a horse yelling "Im a studhorse'' Im a stud horse ketch me if you can" The Sheriff caught him, but since it was a new town with no jail and the first day of court, they had no place to keep him, they decided to lay him on the ground until he sobered up an turn a wagon bed upside down on top of him; While awaiting his turn in court a heavy rainstorm came an beat upon Lowe; When he was brought before the court he was shivering cold and repentent, more sober than the judge(Lowe folklore).
