OLD THOMAS1 MARLOW SR (1805-11/21//1861)
By Henry Charles Ward
According to tradition Thomas1 Marlow came from England through Hampton
Roads VA.
11/3/1824 at Rhea Co TN, Thomas md Elizabeth Ward(1809-7/21/1847).
Elizabeth died and Thomas1 md Profanie White(6/18/1827-8/26/1903),,
d/o Hannah White, a widow from Sequatchie Valley, Crossville, TN.
Hannah White is in the 1880 Census in the home of her grandchild, Powell.
Elizabeth's marriage to Thomas in Rhea Co points strongly to the fact of a
family tie, between Elizabeth Ward and the descendents of Benja Ward SR1
who died in 1820 and buried in the St John Episcopal Churchyard, Valle Crucis,
NC., some of Benja Wards descendents then left traveling the Wilderness Rd
(today HWY 11) on their journey west, one was Duke Ward, s/o Benjamin Sr I,
who settled for a short time in Rhea Co TN in 1824, later moving to Clinton Co.,
ILL. Most historians have accepted Elizabeth as the d/o Benjamin Ward SR 1.
Thomas and Elizabeths marriage in Rhea County is a strong clue that Thomas
came into Tennessee with the Ward Clan, and on into the New River Area of
Anderson/Campbell County TN.
Thomas Sr marriage to Profanie White(6/18/1827-8/26/1903), points to
a relationship brought into the family by his son James who moved to the
Sequatchie Valley area about 1849.
James then became a confederate soldier, on the opposite side of the civil
war aginst his brothers who were union soldiers.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861 Old Thomas1 and his sons joined the
Union Army; PVT Co A 1ST TN INF. Thomas mustered in Aug 2 1861 at
Jacksboro TN; Died of typhoid fever at London KY 21 Nov 1861, and buried
about 5 miles south of Nicholsville KY; Camp Nelson Cemetery, grave 2174.

Polly, Byrd andAdam died young.
Family folklore: Mr Henry Byrge could make objects move, large as chairs and
tables with his mental strength.

Mikey Tackett lived at the top of the Ridge, on the opposite side of Beech Fork
Creek from Beech Fork Church, New River, C-CO TN. The Mikey Tackett Cemetery
is named after him, near where he lived.

who was crippled, who md Henry Byrge. Sally had a child namely Pryor
Kennedy(1907-1953). Pryor was raised by Old Ell Kennedy.
According to folklore Henry Byrge was his father but Richmond Kennedy, s/o Ell
was also considered his father. Sally and Pryor are buried in Grave Hill Cemetery.

* Finn Ward was the mailman, his daughter, Elnore Ward was the first wife of
Cal Carroll; Elnore had two children who died at age 6 and 11.
*Elnore and children are buried at Grave Hill Church (*Ruthie Byrge widow of
Bratcher Byrge, d/o Cal Carroll).
Finn Ward was the last mounted mailman on New River, in the late 1920's the
mail was brought in by Railroad from Oneida TN.

Family folklore: Tom Marlow had children named Hue L. and Sally; Sally
married Richard McGhee, Richard and Sally had a daughter named Laura Ellen
McGhee who married William (Bill) Phillips. Hue L. married Anna Phillips
William's sister. Anna and Hue had two or more children. Hue got in trouble
and spent time in prison for conspircy in a murder, Annie then lived with her
brother William. William's wife Laura Ellen died and William married 2nd to
Hattie Carroll; Hue's father Tom seized Annie's children and took them away,
none of the family ever heard from them again. Annie, William and Hattie
moved to Kentucky, Annie suffering mentally died in Kentucky with a heart attack.
William and Hattie moved back to New River. Later they visited Anna's gravesite
and couldn't find it (Aunt Ollie Phillips).

in head of Adkins Branch, close to the old abandoned mountain footpath
between Shea and Smokey Jct TN.
Isey 1st md Matthew Patterson(1833-1863) and lived on Elijahs Fork in
Anderson Co. Matthew was captured by the Confederates and died in
prison at Knoxville, 13 April 1863.

s/o Thomas and Elizabeth. About 1849, James(Jim) Marlow md Sally McGhee(Williams)
(1828-1915), in Campbell Co., TN.
James and Sally moved to Putnam Co., TN(Baxter, TN.) bought land and
raised their family. Their old homeplace is located 3 miles NW of Baxter TN.,
on Martins Branch and McBroom Creek, it was about 600 acres.
James and Sally's CHILDREN; Simpson, Benjamin, Harrison, Wm J(Will),
Lena, Emily, General Lee.
NOTES: About August 1861 James Marlow Joined the 17th Regiment Tn Vols.,
Confederate Army, was shot in the battle of Wildcat KY., in the lungs.
James recovered from his wounds but died 14 years later.
NOTES; According to folklore; James owned a lot of land in Campbell Co TN,
he got involved in a land dispute, a man was shot an killed, James left the area
and settled in Putnam Co TN. James is buried in Marlow Cemetery(Baxter TN)
off HWY 70, Putnam Co TN.

he md Mary__? b/TN., abt/1854.
SIMPSON AND MARY CHILDREN: (all females)Dovey T(b/1875),
Anvia(b/1877), Maud(b/1878). They were all living in Putnam CO.,
TN., in 1880.
NOTES: Simp got possession of the Marlow family farm on Martins Creek,
he ran a legal still on the farm, and sold bonded whiskey. Simp later left
Martins Creek taking his possessions and a young woman with him to
Missouri named Martha Rogers, Martha died in Missouri of Pneumonia.
It is belived that Simp died in Missouri.
According to the family records; Simp also had a female child named Birchey
by a woman named Elizabeth, Elizabeth was called "Aunt Liz" she moved to
Cookville to a house that Simp had built for her. "Aunt Liz" inherited the
old Marlow homeplace after Simp left; Birchey Marlow md a Doctor Wheeler,
Birchey had a son named Birch who inherited the old Marlow homeplace,
he sold it to Louis Sadler.

Harrison is believed to have girls named; Lena, Viola, Sally.

William and family moved to Texas in 1895.

Thomas K., Mack. Ethlyn is mother of Benton and Bethel. Cora is
mother of Mabel.
General Lee worked the family farm, which belonged to Simpson
his brother.

River). George W has some children buried there also.
There were several George Marlows and easy to confuse with another.
A warrent was issued for this George W, Marlow(making moonshine?), he was
ambushed, shot and killed by Miles Deweese who was a constable deputy for
the area(Nicks Creek)(Scott CO TN) Miles Deweese has an infant child buried
in the Nicks Creek Church Cemetery(@Clifford Burress-Historian).
