WILLIAM BILLY MASSENGALE

According to verbal history the top of the mountain above Caryville
TN.,  all the way to Nicks Creek on New River belonged to the
Massengale family, and the main horsepath and mail route from Caryville,
into New River(Highhouse PO), followed the top of the mountain into
Nicks Creek; And Nicks Creek was named after Nickolus Massengale
(unknown) the first settler there.
According to information, this old road was closed down after the 
Railroad from Oneida was run up to Clinchmore; And a new road
from Caryville was run to Clinchmore, and beyond(About 1913).

William "Billy" Massengale(b/1795),

August 22,1847, Jordan, Matthew,and William Massengale received Land
Grant #27203 from the State of Tennessee for 5000 acres.
The beginning point was across the river at Nick's Creek. From the point
of the beginning, the line ran up the left side of Nick's Creek, to a point
on the mountain top where Nick's Creek heads out on one side, and
Montgomery Fork heads out on the other side. The line then ran along the
top of the mountain toward Montgomery 600 poles (9900 ft.) to a point,
then back across the head of Crosses Creek 825 poles (13612 ft.) to the
point of beginning across the river.

s/o Levi Hawkins, a Cherokee Indian who escaped from the Federal
Troops who were taking the Indians to Oklahoma in 1838. Columbus was
reared near Roasting Ear Springs on Massengale Mountain. Later "Babe"
deserted Syntha Jane and a houseful of children. He died in Inman, Ky.

Syntha Jane moved from Massengale Mountain to the mountain above
Briceville, Tenn. Later she moved on the other side of the mountain to
the head of Stoney Fork Creek, about two miles above the former site
of the Clinchmore Coal Mining tipple.

Syntha Jane was called "Granny" Hawkins by everyone.

Beechgrove, Tenn. Syntha's children, Lonie, Levi, Dewey, and Tilda are
also buried there.
