MCGHEE, John C(6/2/1792-6/23/1821)
m Judy Cole 1804-1871; served in war of 1812.
John was one of the first settlers on New River in the old 14th CD of
Campbell Co. John and Judy are buried across the River at Nicks Crk
Church, in a family cemetery. Johns sons served in the Civil War.
John C. and Judy Cole McGhee lived on the old mountain footpath trail
to Smokey Creek from Roberts Ford(Shea), the old McGhee Cemetery and
homeplace is across the river from Nicks Creek Church up the mountain, their
sons were divided in the civil war, two sons Sampson McGhee and Alexander
McGhee on the north side, and son Duncan McGhee on the south side.

John C. McGhee's father is James McGhee from Pennsylvania.
James McGhee served in the Revolutionary War, and in the Anderson
County Militia. After 1806 he served in the Campbell County Militia.
Another family fable is that the first McGhee of this line was a stowaway
on a ship from Ireland at age 17 along with two of his cousins.
John C. Mcghee was drafted at Jacksboro and served as a private in John
Porter's Tenn. Militia during the war of 1812 near Mobile, Alabama, until
peace was made, John served under Col. Tunnell and General Colter, 1814-1815.
John and Judy Cole were married on 8/13/1821.

Bird is buried Bunch Cemetery, died of gunshot.
Family Legend) In the early 1900's moonshine whiskey flowed from the New River
Area, law and order was hard to find. Bird Daugherty was Deputy Sheriff of
10th CD Anderson County. Bird arrested Watson Daugherty, s/o Daniel Britton
Daugherty which started a feud between the two Daugherty families.
4/9/1922 Bird and sons Willie and Fisher were ambushed and killed on top of
Waldens Ridge, Anderson Co; A witness Pyre Bunch stated all three were shot
and killed, one was on his knees praying. Daniel Britton Daugherty and Bob Lowe
stood trial and were sentenced to prison for murder.

s/o John C McGhee and Judy Cole, md 11/18/1865, to Isabella
Burress(11/14/1847-5/22/1922), d/o Thomas Newton and Mariah Seiber
Burress. Sampson served in Civil War, Co B 8th Calvery. Sampson lived on New
River in Campbell Co TN, later moved to Caryville, buried in the Rains Grove Cem,
at Caryville.
According to legend, Samp was the last Postmaster at Beech Fork(Highhouse PO),
when the mail was brought in by mounted mailmen. In the 1910's the railroad
was run up the New River Valley, then the mail train bus started bringing
the mail in from Oneida, afterwards Sampson relocated to the ridges in
Caryville and buried there in the Rains Grove Cemetery.
The High house Post Office was located between Shea and Smokey Creek
in the old mountain footpath trail.
CHILDREN: John P(b/1870), Elizabeth, Sampson, Alferd(b/1878), Milliard,
Mariah(b/1873), Nancy(b/1876), Mary and Martha(Twins).
