THE STORY OF REVEREND MOSES PHILLIPS(1825-1877).
A land deed dated 11/1852, book N, page 40 of Campbell County, list's heirs
of Benjamin Ward Jr 11, one of the first settlers of New River on Beech Fork
Crk. This deed states his daughter Susan(Susanna)married Moses Phillips, his
daughter Clarissa married Claibourn Phillips, and his daughter Mary married John
Phillips; The three Phillips men could have been brothers; However this has not
been proven, and their parents are not known. Claibourn and Clarissa Ward burial
place is unknown. John and Mary(Vina)Ward Phillips and Moses and Susannah
Ward Phillips are buried at Beech Fork Church.

Reverend Moses(1825-1877), 5/18/1846 md SusannahWard(b/1827), d/o Old
Benjamin2 Ward Jr and Catherine Harmon Ward from Valle Crucis NC;
They lived on the Anderson County side of Red Oak Mt; there were two sets
of twins in their family. Moses helped build and pastored the Beech Fork
Church and others. Moses served in the Civil War, USA 11/8/1864-
7/27/1865, Co G 7th Mtd Infantry.
FOLKLORE; A heavy snow had fell when Confederate soldiers came through The
New River Area and on Red Oak Mountain, rounding up deserters for their army,
trying to find the road to Lake City, robbing households of everthing; Taking
Rev Moses shoes and belongings they drove him barefoot in the snow; On Vowell
Mountain the Confederates got lost; Moses escaped and Joined the Union army.
