BENJAMIN1 WARD SR(1750-1820) AND SELAH WARD OF VALLE CRUCIS, NC.
A gravemarker at St Johns Episcopal Church, Valle Crucis NC; reads Benjamin
Ward-Wife-Selah Emigrated from England about 1775. Old Benjamin Sr is
buried there, his wife Selah after 1820 moved to Rhea/ Meigs Co TN with her
son Nicodemus and was living according to the census record in 1840. No proof
that Benjamin Ward came from England; Its more likely he and his clan were
from Virginia and that they are the children of Richard Ward of Pittsylvania's
son, Benjamin Ward. This Richard Ward died 1762 in Lunenburg Co, Va, and
had a daughter, Tahpenes Ward who md Phillip Webber. Richard may have had
another child by his 2nd wife, Mary Johns, as she was pregnant when he made
out his will. Thanks to BrenReed@aol.com for update.
Benjamin1 Ward(1750-1820) after serving in revolutionary war (NC Unit SGT)
received a land grant for 300 acres on the south side of Watauga River on the
opposite side of Cove Creek, Ashe Co., NC. Benjamin and wife Selah settled
there about 1787. Their old farm is located just a short distance down the
Watauga River from Valle Crucis NC.
THE CHILDREN OF BENJAMIN1 WARD SR; Duke, Benjamin2 Jr,
Elizabeth, Selah, Nicodemus, Kelly, Daniel, Jessie, James, Michael?
Cell ? and Avery ? also two unknown daughters.
Statement by Brenda Reed;
Benjamin Ward SR and Celah did not have a son named Michael. He had a
brother (younger) named Michael who died before Dr. William Ward died.
Also McCaleb Ward was known as Cell Ward or Kelly Ward, depending on
the documents - they were not 3 different people. Brenda Reed.

THE STORY OF BENJAMIN WARD JR II.
Benja and family came to the old 14th CD of Campbell County TN(today 6th CD)
and settled at the mouth of Beech Fork Crk at New River. It is believed the
side of Beech Fork Crk he settled on was in CD 10 of Anderson Co, the
boundries were later changed. Michael Ward(brother of Benja SR), Old Thomas
Marlow and Old Martin T Kennedy probably came with him. Martin T Kennedy's
mother could be Mary Obedience Ward Kennedy, sister of Benjamin1 Ward in
the will of Dr Wm Ward of Rutherford Co TN. Old Martin T Kennedy is first
listed in Scott Co, after his 2nd wife died he md Rachel Ward d/o
Benja(1775-1836) and is listed in Campbell Co. The area of Shea TN(New River)
(Beech Fork) the county lines meet near there at Ward Cem(Lowe Gap) of
Anderson, Campbell, Scott. The County lines were changed, I believe twice.
BENJAMIN WARD REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS.
A deed written11/29/1852 names five children of Benjamin Ward, Jr. namely;
Susan, Clarissa, Wm, Michael and Benjamin. The deed states that there was a
Benjamin Jr and a grandfather named Benjamin. The real estate transactions
were taken from deeds & land grant records and did not identify the person as
to age, generation and relationship to others. The information below was taken
from the Register of Deeds Office in Anderson County, Tenn.

LAND GRANTS.
Benjamin Ward of Anderson Co; Given a NC grant Aug 7, 1787.

Book 18, page 796.
Benjamin Ward of And-Co: Grant #2l073, for 50 ac; Sep 1, 1837;
in Book 20, page 501.
Benjamin2 Ward Jr of Anderson, Campbell, Scott Co, is believed to die 1836.
Signatures after 1836 are believed to be Benjamin3 Ward(1816-1859).
In the early 1800's the New River Area of Anderson, Scott and Campbell County
was virgin territory and a person could live hunting and trapping wild game, if they
could survive the exposure to the elements of this rough mountain terrain, wild
Indians, beasts and disease; Virgin tree's larger than 15 feet in diameter are
recorded in some writings.
Benjamin Ward listed in 1830 Anderson Co TN Census; 1 male age 50 to 60;
1 fem age 50 to 60; CHILDREN: 2 males 10 to 15; 1 male15 to 20; 1 fem
5 to 10; 1 fem 10 to 15.
NOTE this would probably be Benjamin II and wife Catherine. If so his children
would be; MALES; Age 10 to 15; Benjamin III and William; Age 15-20; Michael.
FEMALES; Age 5 to 10; Clarissa; Age 10 to 15; Mary Vina.
FOLKLORE: The first white man to settle on Beech Fork Creek (Shea Tn) was
named Ward, he lived in a huge giant Beech Tree, Beech Fork got its name
because of the giant beech trees that grew there. If the story is true the man
would surely be Benjamin2 Ward Jr, or his Uncle Michael Ward SR., from
Valle Crucis NC. My guess is they lived in the Beech Tree's while visiting, and
later brought their family to the area. In 1835 Benjamin sold his property to
Drewry Carroll and Selah Ward. Selah was his daughter who married Drewry
Carroll; The land sold was located on the banks of Beech Fork Crk and New
River, this land today is broken up into lots, the Fellowship Baptist Church sits
on one of the lots.

SELAH WARD AND DREWRY CARROLL GENERATION.
(2b) SELAH3 WARD(1806-1879),
d/o Benjamin II and Catherine Harmon WARD.
Selah md 1st Drewry Carroll(1800-1874), s/o Old Drewry and Nancy who settled
on Smokey Crk. There is strong evidence of a blood tie between the Carrolls
and the descendents of Cherokee Smokey and his Squaw woman who were living
on Smokey Creek when the 1st settler came namely; Grand Mikel Low in the
late 1700's; The Indian did not like Low's presence on Smokey Creek, they
later became involved in a death struggle between them, Mikel slew the Indian,
his Squaw remained in the settlement and had several ½ breed children,
according to folklore her children were Carrolls and Low's, her daughter named
Louisa Carroll was the 1st wife of Old Madison Kennedy. Selah and Drewry
must have married in NC., and could have come with parents about 1824 and
settled on Smokey Creek in Scott County.
In 1835 Drewry bought 20 acres on Beech Fork at New River from his father-
in-law, Benjamin 2Ward Jr. This is the last document I believe that Old
Benjamin 2 signed.

Benjamin and Catherine Ward did have a son named Michael; However this
Michael may not be the son of Benjamin and Catherine Ward, needs proven.
Michael Ward s/o Benjamin JR., is named guardian of his brothers
children; Minor children of Benjamin3 Ward and Sabra in Campbell Co
Court in 1859. After Michael died Fred Kesterson is named guardian.
..............................
NOTE: There were many New River Michael Wards; Benjamin 2 had an uncle
Michael Ward named in the will of Dr Wm of Rutherford Co, which may have
come to Anderson Co TN.
There is a Michal Ward in the 1830 Anderson Co TN Census;
Michael(1775-1865?), This Michael Ward is the first Ward recorded in
the New River Area of Scott, Campbell, Anderson Co TN.
He could be the brother of Benjamin Ward SR(1750-1824).
Benjamin2 Ward JR, had son Michael(1810-1865?).
Eli Ward(1831-1897)(Beech Frk Cem) had a son Michael(Mike)(1878-1930).
Old Dukey Ward(1837-1897)(Rains GroveCem) had a son Michael(Mike)(MD)
Ward(1857-1934)(Beech Frk Cem).
This story was told by DL Byrge;
Michael Ward and his son John came back from the civil war, horses loaded
down with goods, gold and money, opened a store below where the old school
house set at Beech Fork(Marlow School)(Shea, TN), at the end of the
swinging bridge, Michael died and John heired all the money; John spent
all on wimmin, whiskey and gambling and died poor.
Not sure which Michael (D.L. Byrge).
DL also stated that there was an old log building on the side of the hill
where Beech Fork School House did stand(old Marlow School House) it was
used for School and Church meetings; Old Michael Ward and son hooked
onto it with horses and dragged it down to the bottom of the hill and
started a store in it. (Michael Ward is unknown).
DL Also stated that Michael had for sale wimmin and whiskey; Some of
the wimmin were black; Michael died and his son John heired everything
including the wimmin. (DL Byrge).
DL Byrge stated that this story was told to him by his ancestors.
Old Arthur Ward who lived in the Ridges at Caryville stated, that he also
was told many times the same stories by his ancestors;
Arthur Ward stated that when he was a small boy, he witnessed the
funeral of one of the black wimmin who belonged to Old Michael and
John Ward from Beech Fork; She died and was buried at Cove Lake Sharp
Cemetery at Caryville; She had old clay pipes she smoked, they were
buried with her. Arthur could not remember the year or her name.

MARTIN T KENNEDY SR.
................................
The Civil War disability record of Sterling Kennedy, s/o Rachel Ward, states
the blood ties of his mother to Benjamin Ward JR.
...............................
Family Folklore retold by D.L. Byrge deceased " A long time ago a man by the
name of Ward come to these mountains, who had a wagon load of wimmin, one
of then had a little boy named Eli Ward; Eli had several kids by different
wimmin, and that's where the Ward's come from; Eli's Mother married a
Kennedy and that's where the Kennedy's come from; Kennedy died and she
married a Tackett and that's where the Tackett's come from; Her son Eli a
farmer married with children had an affair with another woman and fathered
children by her" Historians have found Mr Byrge's memory to be remarkably
accurate; In Adkins Carroll Cemetery is Rachel Thompson, deceased 5/13/1870;
Martin Kennedy, died 6/30/1849; John Tackett died 4/19/1856. Pappy Ben
Phillips(1877-1982) and others have said all Wards came from North Carolina.
.................................
Rachel 3 Ward came to the New River Mountains before 1840, she had three
sons; William Ward, Duke Ward, and a son Eli Ward who is buried at Beech
Fork Church, his marker is broken in pieces, and is barly readable; A new stone
was installed for him 12/25/2000.
Eli4 Ward had a son, Duke5 Ward(1888-1954) who is buried in Sunset Cem,
Clinton TN. Duke5 wrote these words in his family Bible; My father is Eli
Ward and my mother was Elizabeth Webb. My mother was a Tennesseean.
They all came from NC on my fathers side, Watauga County NC. Theare were
9 children in my fathers family, Louisa, John, Rachael Polly, Billey, Elisabeth,
James, & Duke & Sterling or Joe.
He also wrote; My grand parents were Henry Loveday and Rachael Ward.
.......................
One family story relates that Henry Loveday was engaged to Rachel Ward, but
he died before the wedding and the children kept the Ward surname.
.......................
Rachel 3 married Martin T. Kennedy Sr(1815-1849) in 1841, they had three
children namely; Lorenza(L); Sterling and Martin Jr. Martin Sr. had children
by previous marriages; Jackson, Logan, Madison Sr, and Goldman. Martin Sr.
died & Rachel married 2nd to John Tackett(1785-1856), they had two children;
Mike and Ike. After John Tackett died Rachel married again to William
Thompson in 1856, they had a son namely; John R Thompson(b/1860).
