THE STORY OF DUKEY WARD.
Benjamin Jr2 Ward came to Campbell Co TN about 1824, and later bringing all
his sons and daughters with him. One of his daughters was Rachel 3 Ward
Kennedy Tackett Thompson. According to legend Rachel was engaged to
marry Henry Loveday, Henry died before the wedding. It is believed that
they had three children, namely; Eli, Wm and Dukey who went by the name
of Ward. Eli and Wm Logan are buried in Beech Frk Cem., Campbell County,
on New River. Dukey is buried in Rains Grove Cemetery, Caryville.

Old Dukey Ward's mother was Rachel Ward Tackett Thompson(1811-1870)
who is buried in the Carroll Adkins Cemetery, on the opposite side of Beech
Fork Creek, from Beech Fork Church, in CD 6 of Campbell Co TN.
The proof is in the Civil War pension record of Sterling Kennedy a half

Dukey Wards Civil War Army Record states he was born in Anderson Co TN;
Dukey settled at Little Crk, one mile upriver from Shea and raised his family;
He 1st md Barbara Patterson; 2nd md Sarah Brown. Old Dukey served in
the Civil War, CO I 7TH MTD INF,USA, and is not be confused with Old Eli
Ward's Dukey, who is younger and md Prudy his daughter. Old Dukey before
1890 moved to the Ridges at Caryville, he died in 1897; Buried in Rains Grove
Cemetery, Caryville; Wife Sarah later died in the home of Arthur Ward,
grandson of Wm Logan & Eliza Jane Kesterson Ward. DUKEY'S CHILDREN:

1st md Mirah Seiber, d/o Phillip Seiber. Henry & Mira had one child, Litha
who was born blind; Mira died and Henry md Cresia Tackett. Henry and Cresia
buried in the Mikey Tackett Cem; About 2 mi from Beech Fork Church.
FOLKLORE: Mr Henry Byrge could make objects move large as tables with his
mental strength (D.L. Byrge). Evidently Henry dabbled in the occult.

Folklore: Crecia Tackett was crippled and married Henry Byrge; Sallie Ann
did not marry, she lived with her sister Crecia and cared for her in her
crippled state. Sally Ann had one child while living with Crecia and husband,
the child took the last name of Byrge. Crecia could not get around very well
and had never seen a train, even though she could hear it in the valley,
Crecia died without fullfilling her wish to see the train (D.L. Byrge).

Salley Tackett(1873-1930), is buried at Grave Hill Church; Sally had one child
named Pryor Kennedy(1907-1953), buried at Grave Hill Church;
According to folklore his father was assumed to be Henry Byrge or Richmond
Kennedy. Richmond was son of Old Ell (Lorenza) Kennedy and Jane.
Pryor was raised by Old Ell and Jane Kennedy.

Sterling Ward & Sherman Hatmaker(1880-1921), were in a shootout in 1921
at the upper tipple of Sun Coal Company, on the Caryville Mountain,
both men died. Sterling is buried Woodlawn Cemetery at Jacksboro.
LEGEND: Sterling was a deputy Sheriff trying to serve a warrent.
