A gravemarker at St Johns Episcopal CH, Valle Crucis, NC; Benjamin Ward-
Wife-Selah Emigrated from England about 1775. Benjamin1 SR died in 1820;
His son Benjamin2 Jr married Catherine Harmon and came to the New River
area of Campbell Co., about 1824 and settled in the mouth of Beech Fork
Crk at New River; Bringing all his sons and daughters with him, some of
Benjamin2 and Catherine Harmon Ward descendents are buried at Beech Fork
Church; One of their daughters was Rachel 3 Ward Kennedy Tackett
Thompson; Rachel is buried near Beech Fork Church, in the Carroll Adkins
Cemetery, under the name Rachel Thompson.
Rachel had three small boys when she came to Beech Fork, Namely; Eli, Duke,
and William, sons of Rachel WARD and Henry LOVEDAY.

Old Eli4 Ward(1831-1897), is son of Rachel 3 Ward Kennedy Tackett Thompson
and Henry1 Loveday, from Wautaga County NC. Eli Ward's mother is the
Rachel Thompson buried in the Carroll Adkins Cemetery, Near Beech Fork
Church. Old Eli's 1st wife Elizabeth Webb(1830-1885?) was a sister of
Thomas Newton Burress who settled at Nicks Crk. Elizabeth was closely related
to the Seibers, Duncans, Webbs and Frost's, from Frost Bottom.

Folklore: Jasper met Louisa crying lost in the mountains, Jasper took her home
and later married her. According to the book of Neal Byrge and other
information, Louisa's 1st child was the son of Jasper however he went by
the name of Thomas Ward(b/1875).

under the name of Jones. Esau spent most of the remainder of his life in a
mental instiution in Knoxville, he was released in 1933, but came back stating
that he had no place to live.

married him to a girl they both had an affair with? and Eli was the father of
her children. This girls Children were; French Carroll, Perry Ward, Susie
Ward, George Roberts. May not be true. Needs to be proven. There were
several John Wards. These children will be included with Eli Ward's children.
The mother of the children are Clery Tucker and Susan Roberts. Some of the
children list Eli Ward as their father on their death certificate. Eli Ward had
a son named John(b/1856), he is listed in the 1870 Census in the household of
his father Eli. The 1870 Census also lists another John Ward age15 and Lueza
Ward age 20, married Jan 1870, this marriage is not listed in the Anderson Co
marriage records; According to the census they lived close to Eli Ward; The girl
is assumed to be Louisa(Eliza)(Lueza) Tucker Ward Roberts Rector, who is d/o
Melviney Tucker Carroll? This is evidence that the childrens mother did not
marry Eli Wards son.
John Ward divorced a Susie Ward 3/11/1880. And Eli Ward married a Susannah
Roberts in 5/1886. Louisa(Lueza)Tucker and Susannah Roberts were half sisters.

Louisa Tucker married another John Ward not the son of Eli, and divorced. It
is speculation that Eli Wards son John 1st married Susannah Roberts and divorced,
then Eli Ward, Johns father married her.
Eli Ward's son John(b/1856) is listed in the 1870 Census as age 14, in the
household of his father Eli.
The 1870 Census also lists another John Ward age15, Lueza Ward age 20,
married in Jan 1870, this marriage is not listed in Anderson Co marriage
records; According to the census they lived close to Eli Ward. The girl is
assumed to be Louisa(Eliza)(Lueza)Tucker Ward Roberts Rector, who is believed
to be d/o Melviney Tucker Carroll.
John Ward divorced a Susie Ward 3/11/1880; Eli Ward married a Susannah
Roberts in 5/1886. Clara and Lueza are believed to be full sisters;
(Susannah(Susan)(Sookey) was a half sister, Grand daughters of Old Sarah
Phillips by a previous marriage; Sarahs last marriage was to Old John Carroll.
ELI 4 WARD(1831-1897) AND CLERY TUCKER, THEIR CHILDREN:
NOTES; It was once believe that Louisa F Tucker was the mother of four of
Eli Wards children, new records found have proved that that is not the case;
Allow a margin for error here, Clara Tucker could be the mother of three of
Eli Wards children, namely: French Carroll, Perry Ward, and George Roberts.
The death certficiate of Susie Ward listed below states her mother was Susan.
Clara Tucker and Louisa Tucker were sisters. Clara is buried in the John
Carroll Cemetery on New River, on the Campbell, Anderson Co line; Red Oak MT.

Francis Carroll also was married to Mary(Polly) Byrge, d/o Jasper and Louisa
Ward Byrge, or Mary Byrge, d/o Micheal and ELizabeth Phillips Byrge.
There were two French Carroll's, however this French Carroll is believed to be
the one who married Mary Byrge, d/o Michael and Elizabeth Byrge.

NOTE!! LEWIS CARROLL(1874-1/15/1929) md Clara Byrge(1870-1953), d/o
Michael and Elizabeth Phillips Byrge. Clara had 4 children by French
Carroll, namely; Melt, Howard, Dan, Hugh.
According to historian Neal Byrge, Howard is buried in the Perry Ward Cem.,
Low Gap, Bootjack MT. There are ten graves in the Ward Cemetery, only
four have scribed stones; If Howard is buried there his stone is not scribed.
Perry5 Ward and French5 Carroll were brothers; French5 was adopted by
John Carroll; Perry and French were sons of Eli4 Ward(1831-1897). Clara
and Lewis children; Marion, Bessie, Wayne, Sammie. Lewis and Clara are
buried in the Carroll Cemetery, Anderson Co TN, according to Neal Byrge.

were making Moonshine whiskey, in a drunken state of mind, got in an
argument and were struggling with a pistol, which discharged into Walters
stomach; Walter died about a week later from the gunshot.
According to statements from family members Walter made peace with God
on his deathbed, and died telling his brothers not to blame Bob.

George is listed in the 1880 Census in the home of Jacob Miller as an orphan.
Georges mother is Susannah Roberts or Clery Tucker(1850-1876). Since Clery
died in 1876 she could have died in Childbirth with George. Clery is buried in
the John Carroll Cem, Red Oak MT. Clery and Susannah could not be the same
person.

s/o Robin, before marriage to Jo Hile; Maynard was killed by a train when
George was 1 yr old. Jo Hile's 1st wife was named Nancy Jane Ward(b/1852),
Nancy Jane's parents are unknown. JoHile settled in the head of Clinchmore
Mt(Beech Fork Crk side), on the backside of Vowell Mt., and buried there in a
single grave on his land. Johile is a direct descendent to Benjamin1 Sr
(1750-1820) and wife Selah Ward buried at St John Church, Valle Crucis NC.

Eli WARD's last marriage was to Jamina Jones, 8/1894, widow of Clevland Jones.
Jamina stayed one night with Eli and went back home on Red Oak Mountain,
the Campbell County Court granted her a divorce 11-2-1897. Eli died 16
March 1897, and was buried in Beech Fork Cemetery on NEW RIVER-C-CO-TN.
Eli grave is on the left just below the gate.
